Family Cultural Navigator at South Lake High School

CIS Seattle, South Lake High School, and two other community partners were recently awarded a multi-year grant to build a new collaborative All in for Youth: Communities in Schools (CIS Seattle) Partnership for Change has a shared vision of a safe, welcoming, and structured learning environment that promotes a positive culture and climate for South Lake High School (SLHS) students – students are engaged and thriving in school, focused on learning, and graduate from high school. CIS Seattle is hiring a full time Family Cultural Navigator based on-site at South Lake High School. This new position was created to strengthen the relationship between families of students attending South Lake and the school community as part of the All in for Youth partnership.

The Family Cultural Navigator is dedicated to achieving high levels of parent and family involvement at South Lake. Successful candidates will be experienced in parent and family engagement programming, have stellar interpersonal skills, be well organized, highly motivated, have experience working with diverse youth and families of color, and committed to empowering families and communities. The Family Cultural Navigator will work closely with the CIS Site Coordinator to offer a tailored approach that connects students and families to community resources while addressing basic needs, e.g., food, shelter, and housing. They will begin with a school-wide assessment in the fall to identify needs and gaps in resources, working closely with partners, students, families, and school leaders to build an action plan across the school. The Site Coordinator will provide intensive case management support to students identified most at risk of dropping out and the Family Navigator will engage families (parents and/or guardians) in establishing leadership roles to not only champion their child’s success, but also be participatory in school and community-wide decision making and activities. The foundation of this relationship is built on trust and access. The Family Cultural Navigator will help families navigate systems and personalities so that they are empowered to advocate for their children.
